The Carrie is presented with the German Sustainability Award
06.11.2024
Mühltal, Germany, 06/11/2024: The Riese & Müller ‘Carrie’ has received the German Sustainability Award. The compact and modular cargo bike, 81% of the frame of which is made of recycled aluminium, was honoured in the “Climate” transformation field.
The renowned prize is awarded by the German Sustainability Award Foundation and recognises products that contribute to the transformation towards a sustainable future.
“The Carrie is a pioneering achievement, both in terms of its product design and use. For the first time, we have developed a cargo bike entirely based on circular design principles, and so can save valuable resources in its production. Designed as an extremely compact cargo bike with a locking box, the Carrie also represents a real transport alternative to cars for a broad target group. As such, it can make an important contribution to reducing CO2,” explains Dr Sandra Wolf, Riese & Müller CEO.
Circular design and car replacement
Riese & Müller has systematically based the development of the Carrie on circular design principles. To achieve this, the company has examined and optimised the entire life cycle of the cargo bike in terms of its sustainability and durability: 81% of the frame is made of recycled aluminium, certified to the ASI standard. We have used no PVC that can be potentially harmful to health with the optional child cover. All accessories have been designed to be easy to dismantle, clean and repair, if necessary.
Thanks to its modular design, the compact Carrie is an environmentally-friendly alternative to the car, particularly in urban environments. Measuring only about two metres in length, it is about as long as a normal bike. Thanks to its flexible transport box, it is exceptionally slim when closed, but offers plenty of storage space when open: a sustainable solution offering a wide range of different uses in everyday mobility, and thus maximum efficiency for riders.
German Sustainability Award for Riese & Müller
Just days before, Riese & Müller as a company was also presented with the German Sustainability Award 2024. In 2019, the premium manufacturer of e-bikes and cargo bikes set itself the aim of being the most sustainable company in the sector. Since then Riese & Müller has been working on extensive sustainability projects – at its own site, along the supply chain, and in logistics, product design and its production process. In doing so, the company is guided by the four levels of responsibility: ecological, economic, social and cultural.
The award ceremony for the 17th German Sustainability Award will be held on 29 November 2024 in Düsseldorf.
